Remembering My Dad

Growing up, I was totally daddy's girl. Even though I am much closer to my mom after I hit my 20s, to my dad, I am always his little girl. When I first moved to the States, no one could mentioned my name without making him teary eyed for having his girl so far away.

Well, yesterday, was the 9th anniversary of the day my dad passed away. 9 years ago when I got that call that no one wants to get. My dad passed away from massive heart attack. My mom called me and I flew back home right away in a daze.

When I arrived, my brothers wouldn't leave my side, that I ended up wondering what's going on. Bless their heart, they were afraid I was going to faint and they want to be there to catch me. I'll never forget when they said that, because that simple act made me realize that my brothers would always be there for me. Without this strong bond of family love, I don't know how I'd have handle the whole thing. And I stayed with my mom for about 2 months. I needed to be close to her, to be at home.

I still miss my dad a lot. On our wedding day, I wish he was there. During the ceremony I chose the song "I Loved Her First" by Heartland to remember him and according to one of my friend, she noticed this soft misty sprinkles behind us during the song and it stop as the song stop. She felt it was as if my dad's way of acknowledging us and I did feel his presence in my heart strongly that day.

A few weeks ago, Tammy from A Day For Daisies offered the DT gals to make a sketch from our favorite pic. I know right away what pic I'd choose. I chose a pic of me and my little brother, Jerry, that's my mom and dad's favorite pic of us.

My li'l brother & me, about 4 & 5 years old.

When I see this pic, it reminds me so much of my dad. He always had this picture on his office desk. It reminds me what a great childhood I had, that I love my brothers tremendously, that I still keep my dad close to my heart, and how thankful I am for my mom. She helps me staying strong, always. I'd have fell apart without her guidance.

This sketch is a surprise for my mom and I can't thank Tammy enough for this beautiful sketch. I like to think that from UP there my dad is also smiling looking at this picture. This sketch come at just the right time. 9 years has passed, I still miss my dad, I still pray for him. When we were all together this past Christmas, he was definitely missed. We miss his big laughter, his hugs, his jokes, we simply miss him.

I want to mention that A Day For Daisies, is offering this "Custom Photo Stamp" starting today and THIS WEEK ONLY, when you buy a custom photo stamp design, you'll get a free 5$ coupon to use at the store! You can check out all the DT gals creations HERE.

Before, I leave, here's the song that I mentioned above. Have a great Friday everyone and don't forget to tell your love ones you love them every chance you get! :)

Wishing You Love & Laughter

Well, it's a dreary day in Houston. It's going to be gray all day long with drizzles through out the day. LOL, hubby wouldn't let me forget that at one time, I forgot the word drizzle ar sprinkling, and I used the word "droplets" to describe the rain. Now, whenever it sprinkling, hubby would joke and said oh, it just droplets. :)

What can I say, English is my second language. Every now and then, I do forget words. Or, sometime I switch language in the middle of a sentence without realizing it. My clue would be when hubby has this look on his face like "I-have-no-idea-what-you-just said" or when he replied in a made up words.

There I went drifting all over the place with my post. Back to earth. With the gray looking weather, I have this card inspired by Moxie Fab "Gray is the new black", that I sure hope can brighten anyone's day. Really loving the doily a lot lately.

I stamped the music note to the middle of the doily only and rubbed the outer part of it with chalk. The butterfly was stamped with old scriptures.  I forgot to take pic of the inside. I finished the inside by stamping music note on the bottom part and added a small butterfly.

As I promised last week, I'll do a giveaway  to celebrate my blog followers. 201! Thank you all. I will post the giveaway detail later this afternoon or the latest tomorrow morning. Hope your week start off in a great way!

ADFD Fairies

Happy Friday! Today I have a couple fairy cards for you. As usual, Friday is a new release day at A Day For Daisies. You can go to Just Picked section of the shop to find all the new images that are released today.

Here's the first card that I made using "Tiny Bee Child" for the "Organic Soul" challenge at ADFD Challenge blog. Basically create any project using something organic. Not quite your typical challenge, but that's what make it fun! :) For my card, I used the fresh "Foxtail fern" that I picked from my front yard. See those greeneries under the flower? Yep, fresh from the garden peeps! Sigh... if you use jasmine or lilac can you imagine how nice the card would smell as well?

Challenges:
CASE Study Challenge - Case Mercy's card
Crafty Cardmakers - color with Pencils
Karber Weekly - Digi Stamp and Ribbon
Crafty Pad - Something New
Pile It On - Anything Goes

My second card is using another new release image called "Dandelion Delivery". This sentiment is one of my favorite sentiment. I probably should have used gray or brown for the sentiment, though instead of black ink, as I think the black colored sentiment is too strong for this card. But, I didn't feel like redoing the card.

Challenges:
Stampin' Royalty - anything with wings
Die Cut Dreams - Use a Digi and a Rubber stamp together
Aly's Sunday Challenge - Things with wings

So, what do you think? Two totally different style of cards. Which one do you prefer? The darker, vintagey looking one of the light pastelly color one?

Here's a peek at some of the image from this new releases at A Day For Daisies:

Thank goodness it's Friday!! Yay! I am looking forward to the weekend!

OTWC Guest Designer

This week, I have the honor to be guest designer at Off The Wall Craftiness. Thank you, Kim, for this opportunity. The challenge is sponsored by Inspired Stamps and here's the color inspirations for this week.

And here's my card that I also entering for Oldie But Goodie Challenge  (bright & cheerful).

Recently, two of my blog gals gave me this Stylish Blogger Award. Thank you so much to Ren-Yi & Jehanne for your kind words.

Rules that accompany this award:
1. Thank and link back to the person who awarded you this.
2. Share 8 things about yourself.
3. Pay it forward to bloggers that you have recently discovered.

8 things about me:
1. I love boxes and drawers. I inherit this from my mom, who's one of the most organized person I know. We could spend hours browsing at The Container Store or IKEA.

2. I am organized and scattered at the same times. I love having a place for everything, I labeled & organized all my supplies, yet if you look at my desk, it always look like hurricane just passed by. But, I know where everything is.
3. By nature, I am a shy & quiet girl, until you get to know me. Then I can be a chatter box. :)
4. Besides crafting, my passion is travelling. One of my dream is to be able to do some serious country hopping. In my bucket list, Greece, Paris, Switzerland, basically Europe in general. I love historical places and I've always want to explore Europe.
5. I believe firmly in karma and being nice to others.
6. I practice Reiki. But, I am not good at meditation. I always fall asleep halfway.
7. Growing up, I wanted to be a fashion designer or a journalist.
8. I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up. :)

I'd like to pass this award on to the following people:
Trinh - who I met through HA Flickr and we hit it off right away. We have met in person & when we get together, felt like I've known her for a long time. I love it when I get to hang out with her.
Amy Tsuruta - I love Amy's fun design and she's such a thoughtful person. She sent me pretty card to cheered me up when I was down and she's always so supportive.
Heather Pulvirenti - I love her style of card making. Her creations are so inspiring.

Phew..... that's a long post! If you read all the way through, thank you for taking the time to read my blog. I really appreciate it!

Yummy Desserts

I almost forgot that I promised to post some dessert pictures from my trip to Jakarta. LOL, for those that know me,  they know I love my dessert. :)

But, first thing first. Here's a card I made for Just Some Lines using "Cat Love 1". Go check out Just Some Lines to see more cute digi stamps.

Challenges:
Promarker Challenge -All You Need Is Love
Tuesday Throwdown - Valentine
Bunny Zoe's Crafts - Love is in the air
Die Cut Dreams - Use a Digi and a Rubber stamp together
Paper Playtime - Use the word 'Love'

Now, you're ready for more food stories? Seriously, my trip home always involved food. The first picture is not dessert, but I just want to share it, cause I simply love the  pic. See how they shaped the rice like a cone and the banana leaves underneath? For me, this is sooo Indonesia.  Love eating this way. I guess the banana leaves brings back childhood memory. For to go food, they often wrap the food layered in banana leaves.

Now, this, isn't it look pretty? See, I don't feel guilty in having dessert after most of my meals in Indonesia. Cause most of them are made of fruit. This was made of strawberry, lychee, and I forgot what they called those seeds. But they are good for you, especially during hot weather, they help cool down the body.

This one was made of grass jelly and lychee. Both desserts served with a little bit of sweet juice on the bottom and best served cold. The grass jelly is also another thing that's great to help cool down the body. I love eating this in hot weather. Oh yeah, the name may not sound appetizing, but they are sweet & yummy (but not super sweet, which is great). Sprinkle a bit of lime.... yumm....ie..... Sweet & fresh!

Hmm... writing about dessert on my blog may not be such a good idea. It makes me hungry and homesick. Sigh... this is one of my favorite. We call it "cendol". Lots of shaved ice, coconut milk, liquid brown sugar, those green worm looking thingy (LOL, they're made of flour and something, have kind of like thick jello texture), and if you're in Medan where I grew up, they usually add "tape" (made of soybean). Sometime they add black or red beans, too. The texture, the flavor... heaven!

Another healthy snack that I love, love, love is "rujak". It's basically mix of fruits served with spicy sauce. There are many different way to make the sauce. I love the one where they used "Stone Banana" as it added some crunchiness to the sauce. Traditionally to make the sauce, we use stone grinder, put the palm sugar, the stone banana, peanuts, fresh chilly peppers, etc. and grind it using a small oval stone. For the fruit, typically you used guava, young papaya, mango, pineapple, jicama, and cucumber. I used to have this as an afternoon snack.

I guess that's why I am not big into warm served dessert. I like my dessert cold or super cold. :) Now, I am super hungry and craving some Indonesian dessert big time. I guess it's time to stalk the Indonesian consulate again and see when they will have this available. Every Saturday the Indonesian consulate in Houston sell different Indonesian food and snack; and hubby and I would go there to get me some stuff, so he doesn't have to listen to my whining how much I miss my Indonesian food. :) And yes, I savor those food to the last bite!

Hope you enjoy the pics. Have a great hump day, peeps!

Butterfly & Doily

Last night, I decided to step out of my comfort zone and trying a more elegant look for my card. As those of you who regularly visiting my blog knows, my style is usually clean & simple or cutesy. Well, I decided to give elegant a try. And, I am even more pleased that I actually like the result.

Challenges:
Let's Ink It Up - NO DIGI and Anything Goes
Pile It On - Anything Goes
BasicGrey  - BG ITEM and dots & spots

I made the card based on one of the skecth that I saw from Lucy's blog. I thought it was part of her week long sketch challenge. Wrong!! LOL, but it was one of her sketch, just not part of the sketch week challenge. Oh well...

I think the card still has my clean look somehow. I couldn't bring myself to add more stuff. I love the white space or in this case the blank space. And that doily... now I can see why people love using them in their card. It does add instant elegance to a card. I see myself playing with more doily and do more distressing.

BTW, I noticed that I almost reach the 200 followers point. Am thinking of doing a giveaway to celebrate. Stay tuned!

Happy MLK Day

Hi peeps! How was your weekend? Hope you had a good one. Mine was pretty good. On Saturday we went to visit my SIL, Kristen and she made some yummy dinner. She was trying new recipes and she's a good cook, so we didn't mind being the guinea pig. :) And, it was great to see our niece, Maddy who grown up way too fas for me. She's already taller than me. Sigh... back to being the shortest one in the family again.

Anyway, here's a girly card I made that's perfect for the latest OTWC challenge. BTW, I'll be their guest designer this week for their new challenge coming this Thursday. So excited!
